Settlement approval is not a verdict that all AI training infringes copyright. It does not establish ordinary customer liability. Individual outputs, later conduct, and rights outside the release require separate analysis.
What the settlement covers matters
The Bartz v. Anthropic settlement administrator reports final approval on July 20, 2026. The Authors Guild’s account describes a $1.5 billion settlement tied to specified works and past acquisition and copying, with defined limits on the release.
The dispute should not be compressed into a claim that every kind of AI training or customer use is illegal. The settlement’s coverage does not settle every question about generated outputs, unlisted works, or future conduct. Current appeal and payment status are separate matters.
Know the rights behind the input and the output
A business content workflow should identify where supplied material came from, what permission covers it, and which provider terms govern the resulting asset. A creative tool is not an automatic rights-clearance service.
- Use original, licensed, or otherwise authorized source material.
- Keep license terms and permissions with the project.
- Review output risks and any indemnity limits before commercial release.
A PRACTICAL THADDEUS WORKFLOW
Keep the brief and its rights record together.
Use project continuity and Artifact Builder to carry an approved brief, source list, permissions, and revisions into production. That record helps your team review what was used and what still needs clearance.

Build a campaign draft using only our approved source pack. Create an asset register with origin, permission, intended use, and unresolved rights questions. Keep source references with the project and leave all publication for review.
A source register is not a legal clearance or a guarantee of noninfringement. Thaddeus’s rights and contractual terms must be assessed independently of the dispute described here.
